It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to send the sensation of fullness to your stomach, so eating slowly and chewing thoroughly is crucial to avoid overeating.
To teach yourself to eat less, try putting down your knife and fork between bites to delay finishing your plate. Additionally, having a (very) small snack about half an hour before your main meal may help kickstart the feeling of satiety, leading you to consume less during your main course.
